What began as a routine dinner between four friends at Brownwood Paddock Square last summer wound up laying the foundation for a card game now available to the public based on one of The Villages’ most popular activities.
“Pickler” — with pickleball as its inspiration — officially went on sale Jan. 6 via the group’s website. Discussions are underway to expand distribution through such outlets as Amazon and Walmart.
“It gave us goosebumps,” said Randy Friedman, of the Village of Fernandina, part of the foursome that turned their August dinner conversation into something marketable.
“We were like, ‘Oh my god, it’s here. We have to stop and cele-brate.’ But we couldn’t because we had to keep developing — ‘Wait, I have website stuff to do. I have e-commerce.’
“We really have to take a breath and look at this and say, I’m actually pretty proud of us because it’s really cool.”
At some point it dawned on them that there are no card games based on pickleball.
Pickler can be played by anywhere from two to nine players, either as an individual or part of a team. It’s a strategy-based game in which each player starts with a certain number of cards and a goal to empty their hand first.
